About Apropos Antiques & Interiors

Apropos Antiques and Interiors is located in the heart of Richmond, Virginia at 3021 West Clay Street.  Owned by Karen F. Austin, this one of a kind shop opened in May of 1981.  For the last 25 years, Karen has been joined in the venture by antique enthusiast, Helen Brockwell.  Together, the two discover, buy, sell a broad collection of antique furniture, accessories, and jewelry spanning the last two centuries.

Apropos doesn’t deal in any one “type” of antiques; since customers have varying tastes, so do Karen and Helen.  They buy furniture and accessories from “vintage” to 18th century.  The oldest item they have ever had the privilege of owning was a Gobelin Tapestry, circa 1790.  Thanks to a lifetime of travel to other parts of the world, Apropos appreciates other cultures and the history each one brings.

As for the owner, Karen was born and raised on Long Island, New York.   Her father was in the Army, so they moved frequently.  When he was transferred to northern Virginia, the family would travel on Route 40 to go up to New York for visits.  At the time, Rt. 40 was peppered with antiques shops and Mom was always stopping – much to the chagrin of Daddy and groans of “not again” from the 3 daughters…..but it really sparked an interest in Karen.  She remains drawn to antiques because of the unique history that is inherent in each piece and LOVES to think of the stories that each piece could tell.  Karen and her husband Butch went on their first trip to England in 1996 and have been hooked ever since.

Apropos Antiques typically participates in 15-20 shows a year from Nantucket, Massachusetts to Grosse Pointe, Michigan, all the way down to Jacksonville, Florida.
